STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Tree felling assesment

Evaluate the tree and its surroundings to decide which way it will naturally fall. Look for indicators of degradation, leaning, wind direction, and impediments like buildings, electricity wires, or trees.

Plan an escape Route

Choose a clear path away from the falling tree. This route should be 45 degrees away from the fall direction.

Safety gear

Wear adequate safety gear, such as a hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots.

Surroundings

Clear the Area. Clear the area surrounding the tree’s base of any obstructions and debris. Make certain there are no bystanders or pets in harms way.

Make a Notch

Stand on the side of the tree, facing the direction you want it to fall. With a chainsaw, make a horizontal cut (the undercut) roughly one-third of the way through the tree trunk. Then, at a 45-degree angle from the initial cut, make a second cut above it to form a notch. This notch will determine the direction of the fall.

Back Cut

From the opposite side of the tree, make a horizontal cut (the back cut) a few inches above the bottom of the notch. This cut should be somewhat higher than the point where the undercut meets to form the hinge.

Felling Wedges

As the tree begins to fall, place felling wedges in the rear cut to keep it from pinching the chainsaw.

Retreat Safely

When the tree begins to fall, swiftly follow your preset escape path. Keep an eye on the falling tree and be ready to respond swiftly if it shifts unexpectedly.

Check for Damage

After the tree has fallen, assess the surrounding area for damage and make sure it fell safely.

Cleaning up

Remove the branches and cut the trunk into manageable portions for disposal or future processing.

Dispose of Debris

Dispose of branches and debris in accordance with local legislation and guidelines, such as chipping, recycling, or burning.

Stump Removal

Use a stump grinder or other appropriate equipment to remove the stump. Remember if you’re unsure about safely felling a tree, you should engage a professional arborist or tree felling service to do the task. Safety should always come first.
